Building Sand Castles is Illlegal
March 19, 2011
Municipal Ordinance No. 246 prohibits the locals from building sand castles along the beaches of Boracay Island. Enacted last 2007, police officers have strictly implemented the law starting January 15, 2008.
Huge quantities of sand are used in building big sand castles, which alter the natural terrain of the beach. They used to be popular as a backdrop for tourists having their pictures taken for a certain fee.
Currently, one needs to have a costly Mayor’s permit to make sand sculptures for promotional and special activities. And to ensure that they also do not hamper pedestrian flow, they can only be built six meters away from the vegetation (the trees beside the white beach path).
Those who are caught breaking this law shall be fined 2,500 PHP (60USD) and may spend 30 days in prison.
